How to Train a Dinosaur
Nurin took a film she loved and made her own guide to training a dinosaur, with inventions, safety gear and tips.
Nurin took the popular animated series How to Train Your Dragon and made her own book from it: How to Train a Dinosaur. It is a fan-made spin-off and the story is all hers. The cover promises "Includes tips", and shows a rider on top of a dinosaur calling, "How to get down from here!"
Before any training starts, she lists the kit. You must have a "chaimberlock", a muzzle with "holes to breathe" that will "stop from bitting". You need an "Electronic leach" that "comes in with a remote so if it gets cranky you can press it and it will force it to stop". The remote "tells how fast it went", tells "how far it travel and where", and has an "emergency button". Last come the "miraclaw" mitts, for hands and legs, to "prevent from scraching" and "prevent from kicking".
Then: "NOW WE CAN GET STARTED". Get a fishing rod and some sardines, teach your dinosaur to fetch, take it for a walk. And a warning: "Remember, dinosaurs are very smart, don't get yourselves in trouble!"
The book stops partway. Its last page says that after three months you can let your dinosaur go wherever it wants.
We find this funny and heartening at the same time. Nurin took something from a film and twisted it into something real: inventions with labels, safety features, a remote with an emergency pull-back. She could tell what was make-believe and what could actually be useful, now or later. And she chose a dinosaur, the same animal as our mascot.
Nurin made this booklet sometime between 2014 and 2018.
